For the coexistence of large carnivores and breeders, small ruminants must be protected by appropriate means of protection used by livestock guard dogs as appropriate solutions. In the thesis, we studied a few dog breeds of livestock guard dogs that are common in Slovenia and gained knowledge about the very way of raising and training a livestock guard dog. We have described the following breeds of livestock guard dogs: Karst Shepherd, Bosnian Shepherd dog, Sharplanin and Caucasian Shepherd. Through further interviews, we determined the suitability of the breeds with proper socialisation and training of independent work and decision making and non-conflicting coexistence with the flock. The findings show that it is necessary to devote time to raising a livestock guard dog so that he can raise a good livestock guard dog. Puppies from proven livestock guard lineages also need to be constantly trained and guided in their daily work in the pasture. For the good protection of the flock, it is recommended that the herd is guarded by three livestock guard dogs on average. It is important for dogs to understand and interact well with each other. They must act as a pack and avoid conflict.
