Abstract
Diplomsko delo temelji na tekstilnem projektu In My Own Head. Izpostavljene teme so aktivizem, feminizem in feministična umetnost skozi zgodovino in danes. Podrobneje so predstavljeni in razčlenjeni različni inspirativni elementi, ki so bili ključni za nastanek projekta In My Own Head.

Title:
Artivism in textile art
Abstract:
This diploma thesis is based on a textile project In My Own Head. It represents the specific problems that girls face growing up in today’s culture, which places the male gender and masculinity above the female gender and femininity. It introduces the conditioning that restricts women throughout their lives. Among the highlighted themes are activism, feminism and feminist art throughout history and of today. The project also includes theories on the beginnings of activism, activist art today and its problems; theories on the beginnings of feminism and its evolution. Theories about feminist art are introduced with key feminist artists (including Ann Newmarch, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, Barbara Kruger, Guerilla Girls among others) throughout history and their work and while key feminist colours, the psychology and history behind them are explained in detail. The experimental part of the thesis combines all information thus far and delves deeper into the artist’s past and presents personal experiences that inspired the project In My Own Head in the first place. Those experiences are then broken down into 3 layers: thematic, graphic and textile inspiration. Thematic inspiration includes thoughts on growing up as a young girl in today’s society during different ages and the obstacles girls and women face based on research and findings in media. The connection between femininity and feminism is also researched. Graphic Inspiration highlights key visual elements, for example the conscious choice of the colour pink in the project. Included are key graphic artists and their work, which also fueled the project in different stages of creation. Last but not least, Textile Inspiration introduces the textile artists that inspired the transformation of thoughts and mantras into actual physical art pieces. The entire thought process is visualized with important elements and quotes and these were later printed on textiles. The prints play a big role in the final product - a short film that encapsulates the story in a very personal way. The message highlights the obstacles that girls and women face growing up and later in life, to make the viewer think about his own thoughts on the matter and to start a dialog.
