Abstract

Title:Club culture in sociology of space: the influence of globalization on place and symbols of club culture
Abstract:
Club culture is a social, political and economic phenomenon, centered around the consumption of electronic music in specific places, like clubs. It is connected to a specific set of symbols, which, simplified, can be divided in a dualism between the political and the hedonistic. At first, club culture was formed by local contexts of specific cities. A specific place in which club culture manifested, represented the aesthetic and context mirroring, but place lost this determining power of identity because of globalization. Nevertheless the sign economy of club culture is based on the specific identity of place image, even if it is not necesarrily connected to a geographic place. Different places are connected to different signs, which impacts the understanding of a specific scene. Globalisation enabled a global expansion of club culture, which lead to both its homogeneity and heteroheneit or respectively, to universalization and globalization. Specific place images, which already contain and produce signs and the physical space, consequently spread through the world. With it, it can be the case of proliferation of a specific genre scene place image or an institutionalised form. Through the latter club culture is understood as a revitalization or developmental strategy of postindustrial cities.

Keywords:club culture, sociology of space, globalization, sign economy, place image.
