Abstract

Title:
The influence of films on self-reflection of the audience
Abstract:
In order to understand a film narrative, it is essential to engage in a movie not only rationally but also emotionally. Watching films can provoke various emotions and affects, and these feelings can be shared with the other part of audience or not. Sometimes similarity between our and fiction story can lead to idyosincratic responses which bring out our forgotten memories and can provoke self-reflection. Predispositions for self-reflection are identification with a character and empathy towards him/her. I constructed a research, based on in-depth interviews, with the aim to distinguish what different experiences where viewers had achieved self-reflection with help of films have in common, in which conditions can that happen, and how much it influences the viewer’s evaluation of the film. While comparing the results from six interviewees I came to a conclusion that films can serve the audience as a form of therapy: to achieve self-reflection, the viewer has to go through a process of identification with the character which is followed by catharis. The result is a release of emotions and realisation of one’s own problems which can later be actively solved and the viewer rates the film as very good. Film narratives with the most potential for self-reflective experiences are composed by complex relationships between charatcters, multi-dimenstonal characters and realistic reflection of social situations – elements, usually prescribed to narratives which are deemed as those of high quality. It is not easy to predict which film will cause self-reflection in the viewer, however, the results serve as a foundation for cinematherapy – branch of therapy where a therapist treats a patient with a help of movies.
