My bachelor’s thesis Acceptance of Literary Characters from the Selected Picture Books was based on the theory of Marjana Kobe on the types of short modern fairy tales with regards to the main character which is supplemented by the theory of Milena Blažić (7 categories) and by the experiential acceptance level according to Boža Krakar. I wished to ascertain which type of characters is more popular in children and whether the characters of personified animals are really more popular, common, and known in comparison to other types of literary characters. I performed the research by means of 14 selected picture books (of Slovenian and foreign authors for seven categories of fairy tales). I included 24 children of the 4 to 5 years of age in the research. By means of activities which included experiential acceptance levels, the children had an opportunity to relive the main characters. Their responses were essential for the research. The research showed that the characters of personified animals are common but no more popular than other literary characters and that the original fictional characters in the selected group of children are the most popular type of characters in the picture book.
