In the master's thesis, we designed and produced a wordless book titled 'Palčica vrtnari'. It is a book which does not use written words to tell a story. Instead, the story is told using only drawings. The book is supposed to be suitable for all age groups and it encourages the use of imagination.
Books of this kind are harder to come by in Slovenia and everywhere else as well. Therefore, we analyzed two Slovenian and a foreign wordless book before starting to work on mine.
In order to properly plan our wordless book, we first undertook the theoretical part. We explored four fundamental areas for making a wordless picture book. These were the types of picture books, the story, the illustration, and the process of making the book.
The production of the wordless book was then processed. We began by choosing the format and sketching the course of the story page by page. We continued to draw with watercolors and calligraphic ink. This process was followed by scanning the originals and choosing the layout and two different fonts. On one of the illustrations, we experimented with three different prints. It was because of these results that I decided to change the color scheme for the whole book. The last step was press and post-press. In the third part, we interviewed 10 people from different age groups, asking specifically for their interpretation of the story.
