The purpose of the thesis is to determine the most typical plant taxons on the Slovenian coast and to define, which of those taxons most frequently occur in various types of open space (roadsite plantings, parking lots, paved pedestrian areas, parks and seaside plantings). The aim of the thesis is to present a list of suitable plants for Mediterranean growing conditions and different types of open space. Determination of plant taxons was based on numerous field visits of towns on the Slovenian coast (Ankaran, Koper, Izola, Piran and Strunjan, and Portorož and Lucija), relevant literature and comparisson of plantings in the same climatelisted.. The plant assortment on the Slovenian coast mainly consists of non-native Mediterranean plant species and varieties. Indigenous plant species are frequently present in older parks and roadside plantings but in modern plantings non-native plants prevail. In the group of large trees London plane tree (Platanus × acerifolia), Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara) and Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) are very common. The genus Celtis, especially the European nettle tree (Celtis australis), is widely used in contemporary roadside plantings and on parking lots. In city parks, main pedestrian and traffic connections and near turistic attractions plantings are more diverse and often include flowering shrubs. The latter are not present in other types of open space analyzed in the study. Oleander (Nerium oleander), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and different rose varieties (Rosa spp.) are the most frequently planted taxons on the Slovenian coast. Lawn presents a very important landscaping element as it creates a strong visual contrast with other planting elements.
