Abstract

Abstract:
Introduction: Nursing and art might appear like two different concepts but lately a lot of research has been done on including artistic practises into medical environment from the view point of improving the profession of nursing and medicine itself. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma is to explore the importance of art and artistic practices in educating mostly nurses as well as other healthcare professionals. Methods: A descriptive method with an overview of scientific and professional literature was used and databases like CINAHL, PubMed, ERIC and ScienceDirect. Results: Lecture with visual thinking strategies may be done in the classroom, where teacher picks three art works to show on a slideshow. Whether the lecture is taking place in a gallery, museum or a classroom, this method is a great tool for teaching observational skills, communication, critical thinking and empathy. Discussion and conclusion: Overview of the literature has shown the application of art, visual or any other form may have a profound effect on the profession of healthcare workers. Art can have a positive influence on the skills of nurses and doctors. This way we encourage development of better observational skills that offer us a better diagnosis, critical thinking, team work, empathy and much more. Unfortunately use of art in education is far more common in social sciences.
