The master thesis aims to show the possibilities of graphic design as a tool for encouraging citizens to participate in active and quality use of urban space. The thesis presents modern examples of the use of abandoned urban spaces and the revival of city centres by using design methods.
My purpose is to show the city users all the possibilities and attract people back from the peripheral location of the shopping centres to the city centres; furthermore, the key elements for social development and improvement of the quality of city life are presented.
In the master thesis, I introduce the city as a place of consumption and socialisation and present the possibilities the city offers to the people. I describe the changes in urban land-use and their effects and show temporary use of space as a form of urban revitalisation in more detail.
Next, I analyse the examples of temporary use of space abroad and in Slovenia and focus on their social and spatial impact.
In the third part, I describe the importance of designing as a tool for encouraging social change and quality of life.
I use the quantitative research method to analyse the selected space to indicate the problem.
The empirical part deals with my project — the Črna Lukna festival. I describe the starting point for the concepts and realisation and present the work process, performance and the effect of the event. I conclude with an analysis of the festival, based on which I suggest possible options for improvement.
