Abstract

Title:Tolstoy's depiction of women in War and Peace
Abstract:
The thesis addresses the dimensions of female literary characters in War and Peace, one of the Leo Tolstoy’s best-known novels. It mainly focuses on drawing possible parallels between the Tolstoy’s literary characters and his personal life. The first part of the thesis brings about the description of disputes related to gender roles throughout the history as well as the depiction of the role of women in Russian society. What follows is a detailed analysis of Tolstoy’s attitude towards women that can be noticed in War and Peace as well. One can claim that Tolstoy was torn between opposing the process of female emancipation and supporting the idea of women being well-situated and satisfied with their lives. The reflection of the author’s personal perspectives can be noted in his female literary characters’ behaviour and decisions.
