My thesis discusses some aspects of imitating various materials. Initially, I outline the history
of copying in the western tradition, focusing mainly on sculpture. I continue with examining
the possible motifs for making copies in the past. I present the main terms, techniques,
commonly used materials and types of moulds. I demonstrate some techniques and
possibilities of imitating materials using case studies. To conclude with, I reflect upon the
durability and transformation of the works of art through time and the influence the choice of
materials has upon sculpture.
