Volunteer Fire Department Unec was founded in 1911. Local newspapers are mentioning firefighters from Unec even earlier, in the second half of 19th century. First 30 years of Fire Department are presented in bachelor’s degree »PGD Unec 1911–1941«. Firstly, there are presented sources, then there is a short overview of Slovenian Volunteer Fire Departments in general from 1941 to 1991. It is followed by another short overview - Volunteer Fire Department Unec from 1911 to 1941. The main part follows Department’s history through each year. The main source is the Department’s archive and local newspapers. Photos are important part of this degree and they show activities of the firefighters from Unec. After the Second World War firefighters in Unec began with the restoration of the Department. They organized firefighter’s parties, meetings and other activities. Soon firefighters from Unec became the best in the area and won several firefighting competitions. In the 50s they bought new fire engine and trailer for the fire engine. They soon found out that they should buy first fire truck, because pulling fire engine with horse yoke is too slow. The long process of buying new truck ended at the end of 60s. Firefighters bought a used truck which was then modified into a fire truck. The Firefighting Association Cerknica failed to provide promised financial means for the truck. Soon firefighters lost their fire station because of the construction of the new motorway. This two reasons meant that in the following years firefighters were not as active as before. At the end of the seventies firefighters in Unec began with the construction of the new fire station, which ended in 1981. Shortly after they bought a new fire truck which could also transport water. Just before the Slovenian independence they began with the station’s extension. After 1991 they continued with renovations and extensions. Last 30 years of the Fire Department Unec are presented through photos at the end of the degree.
