In the thesis I concern myself with historic and present cemetery use focusing on the example of the Žale Cemetery in Ljubljana. I link this to attitudes towards death, but I primarily focus on the spatial form and experience of my informants in order to understand the influences of spatial form on the perception and usage of cemetery landscape. Firstly, I look at the history of burial in Europe form the Middle Ages to the present day. Secondly, I focus on the cemetery history in Ljubljana and the evolution of the Žale Cemetery. I then test the assumptions linked to attitudes towards death and their effect on cemetery use, the impact of spatial form on the usage, the importance of spatial experience in our understanding of space, and the associated role of the architectonic cemetery design. Finally, I present my field work based on the sensory method.
