Abstract
Uporabili smo demografski vprašalnik, Vprašalnik družinskih ritualov in Lestvice družinske prilagojenosti in povezanosti – 4. izdajo.

Title:Family rituals and family cohesion
Abstract:
Research literature demonstrates that family rituals have an important role in family functioning. Families differ in perceptions of family rituals and family cohesion, which holds for family members as well, specifically for parents and adolescents. The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics of family rituals and to illustrate their role in family functioning. In this respect, we examined the relationship between family rituals and family relationships. We also took a closer look at the differences in perceptions of family rituals and family cohesion between adolescents and adolescents’ parents, between genders, and between participants living in single-parent families resulting from divorce and those living in two-parent families. We also investigated the characteristics of maintaining family rituals and how participants differ in perceiving family adaptability according to them. 225 adolescents and 122 adolescents’ parents participated in this study. A demographic questionnaire, Family Ritual Questionnaire, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales – version IV were used. Findings show that both aspects of family rituals, ritual meaning and routine, positively correlate with family relationships, stronger connections being present in the sample of adolescents compared to adolescents’ parents. In the sample of adolescents family cohesion predicts the self-perceived meaning of rituals. 2-way ANOVA demonstrated that adolescents’ parents attribute greater meaning to rituals, perceive more routine behaviour in rituals, and greater family cohesion in comparison to adolescents. No significant differences were found in the perception of family rituals and family cohesion between genders and the effect of divorce was negligible. In most families one person organizes the rituals, this person most frequently being the mother. However, participants do not differ in the perception of family adaptability due to the number of family members that organize family rituals. This research is the first of its kind in Slovenia and casts a new light on the characteristics of family rituals and their connection to family relationships.
