Note: | TITLE: Linguistic stratification in Croatian linguistics / ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the language stratification in the context of Croatian linguistic reality, examines ambiguities and attempts to demystify the causes of some disputes within Croatian linguistics. The key thesis of this bachelor work is the arbitrariness of linguistics and language itself. While the latter is among Croatian linguists largely attributed to the standard language, which is undoubtedly the most important for linguistic policy, the author provides proof that arbitrariness has a much wider reach. In fact, due to arbitrariness many ambiguities appear within various systematizations of languages. The author demonstrates the arbitrariness in linguistics by analysing the relationship between language as a system and standard language, the relation between languages and dialects in the context of territorial stratification and certain functional classifications. At the same time he tries to contribute to the linguistic theory by abstracting the essence of purism and rethinking the role of linguistics in society. / KEYWORDS: linguistics, stratification, arbitrariness, structuralism, purism |
