The Master's thesis Childhood Traumas of Sex Offenders researches the traumas to which sex offenders were exposed, and what consequence they have on the individual. The author wishes to find out the key factors which lead to committing a sexual offence.
In the first chapter, the author represents in general traumas and possible connections on the individual’s psychophysical development. She presents in detail the traumatic events to which the children were exposed in their most vulnerable years, because they can feel the consequences of such events throughout their whole life. They can be manifested as problems with regulating emotions, mostly fear and shame, and as an inability to re-establish relationships, lack of empathy, mental disturbances, etc.
In the second chapter, the author focuses on the main theme – traumas of sex offenders. Sex offenders have poor foundations in their upbringing because they were victims of various forms of abuse. We can often perceive neglect, physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Besides traumas, there are other factors (mental disturbances, environment, hereditary factors, etc.), which lead to the act of sex offence.
In the final two chapters (prevention, cure), the author focuses on recognising and preventing sexual abuse and recidivism. Since sex offenders suffer mental disturbances, which can be a consequence of various childhood traumas, the treatment is long-lasting. First, the treatment has to focus on the feeling of righteousness, then on empathy, socialisation and forming new relationships, since they are often lonely.
