This thesis discusses the fantasy saga The Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, which
gained a lot of popularity among readers all over the world. The first part of the thesis introduces
the life and works of the author and is followed by the theoretical part, which introduces the
genre of fantasy literature. Since the development of the child characters is the focal point of
this thesis, the genre of Bildungroman is also defined. In this context, the four main characters
and their paths in the plot are presented and furthermore connected with Joseph Campbell's
theory of the hero's journey. In addition, the characters are linked with their suitable archetypes,
which makes them unique and multifaceted. Although there are differences between male and
female characters, both are equally important for the story's development.
