The master’s thesis deals with the selective overview of irony as a concept in philosophy, and to a lesser extent in literary criticism. The first part introduces the history of the word in classical antiquity, while the second part focuses on German Romanticism, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and contemporaneity. The aim of the thesis is to examine different views on the given topic and suggest possible explanations for the emergence and existence of irony in the philosophical and literary fields.
