Fencing has a long history in Slovenia. Slovenian Fencing Association is an umbrella organization in the field of fencing sport in Slovenia. It was established in 1928 and was a part of Yugoslavian Fencing Association until 1991. After gaining independence in 1991, Slovenian fencers saw the opportunity and in two years they cooperated in establishment of Slovenian Olympic Committee. Because of their efforts, Slovenian Fencing Association joined International Fencing Federation and European Fencing Confederation. During competition season 1991/1992, three working fencing clubs started organizing national scale competitions. In April 1992, Slovenian fencers made their debut representing Slovenia at their first big competition. Also in 1992, first national competitions were organized after gaining independence. Up to year 2000, Slovenian fencing association`s activity almost died out completely. Fencing has become dependent on the activity of fencing clubs. Despite this, the number of clubs and their members has been slowly rising. Fencing with sabre has returned to Slovenia. After election of new leadership in Slovenian Fencing Association, a whole range of activities have been established, that have not been carried out before. In 2015 and 2017, Slovenian fencing Association has successfully co-organized two big competitions. New fencing groups and new fencing styles appeared. During different periods in time, Slovenian fencing has been developing in different directions.
