Proverbs, customs, traditions and holidays make up the folk culture of every nation. In modern times, their importance and value are slowly disappearing, mainly due to the technological development and the increasing number of educated people. This diploma thesis compares the origin of Slovene and Polish denominations for months, as well as Slovene and Polish proverbs referring to veliki srpan, srpan, avgust and sierpień. Diploma is composed of two parts. The first part of the thesis comprises the theory. Emphasis is placed on the origin of the month names and on the description of the month of August. The second part of the diploma thesis is practical. Here, the emphasis is on the substantive, semantic, morphological and syntactic comparison of the proverbs closest in meaning.
