Digital competencies are highly important in today’s world. They accompany us in all areas of our work in modern society and cover the economic field, everyday life, education, and politics. This situation is mainly due to the constant development of digital technologies and the world it created. Therefore, the need for new skills, called digital competencies, has developed. The latter are further divided into 5 areas: 1. information literacy, 2. communication and collaboration, 3. digital content creation, 4. safety, and 5. problem-solving. In order to be an active member in today’s society, it is crucial to acquire this knowledge, especially for the younger generations who are going to enter the labor market in the future.
Since youth and acquisition of this knowledge are highly important for the future, this thesis was used to study the digital competencies of students from different Slovenian secondary schools. For that purpose, the questionnaire method was used. The questionnaire was constructed by studying the contents of experts who sought similar answers. The purpose of the questionnaire was to gain an insight into the digital competencies of students, how much time they spend on acquiring digital skills, how they gained them, and what the connection between students’ digital competencies and their academic orientation is.
The results of the research of this thesis showed similar findings as described by the experts in this field. The factor of the academic orientation of students predicts digital competencies. Digital natives (youth) have a good foundation to operate in the digital world. There is a need for a change or adapting education to young people.
