Great thinkers, artists and writers perceive reality in their own way, and this conception is projected in their works. In his essays the Young Poland’s poet Bolesław Leśmian (1877–1937) explored and described the contradictions of the world of social schemas where a statistical man is present and concretized his theories in a broad oeuvre of poetry. He relied on establishing a dialogue with the forgotten world, a return to nature, and a primordial man before the loss of his identity, which is later reduced to the type of roles the individual plays in situations of social life. Although the poet was misunderstood and unacknowledged during his lifetime, his theories, as well as his poetic works, are still relevant today.
The diploma thesis explores the theoretical writings of Bolesław Leśmian, collected in Szkice literackie (1959). In the first part, with the help of selected essays Przemiany rzeczywistości (1910), Artysta i model (1911) and Z rozmyślań o poezji(1937), I explore the poet’s reflections and theories; while in the second part, I show how they are concretized in his poetic works. I analyzed the poet’s attitude to poetics, creation and poetry as such through the themes and poetic means used in the poems Zamyślenie (1920), Poeta (1936) and Słowa do pieśni bez słów (1936).
