Gaining independence, Slovenia had to introduce economic changes that would radically influence its future development. Adapting to the new system was necessary due to the national apparatus being reduced as well as due to the rise of multicorporations. Direct foreign investments became one of the primary ways of national development. In my final seminar paper my research is focused on the impact direct foreign investments had on the economy of Slovenia on both the national and the regional level since the turn of the millennium up until 2018. It was discovered that the highest number of foreign investments was located in the Central Slovenia Statistical Region. The fluctuations thoroughly showed the economic state of the country during the observed period, especially the time of recession. There was no significant change in the type of activities. Manufacturing is the one that prevails and service acitivities are gradually increasing. Most investments come from the EU countries; Austria being constantly on the top of foreign investors. Countries that come after Austria are Germany, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and Italy. Slovenia mainly invests in former Yugoslavic countries: Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Russian Federation has in the last years become the fifth country of interest. On the basis of the results, we can conclude that the regions had not been met with substantial investments in our given period, with the exception of the Central Slovenia Statistical Region, which showed a big drop during the recession period. The latest trend suggests a movement also in the other regions, which will hopefully have a steady increase in future years.
