Franc Kavčič is undoubtedly one of the most important representatives of neoclassicism in Slovenia. As the director of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he is still considered to be the most successful Slovenian artist in the world. In my thesis I analysed his painting from 1801 ante quem, titled Girl saves Aristomenes from Captivity. The painting is painted in oil on canvas technique in the size of 71 x 95 cm and is part of a permanent collection of the National Gallery in Ljubljana.
I chose to analyse and research the painting Girl saves Aristomenes from Captivity because it is not present in literature about Franc Kavčič and his work. After extracting the base information about the painting I concentrated on the formal analysis where I discussed subject of the artwork, size of the painting, physicality and mass of the figures and defined the space. I also analysed the use of lines, composition, light, colours that Kavčič used for the painting. After that I focused on iconographic analysis where I classified the motive of the painting, identify basic meanings, search for possible attributes, presented the meaning of characters and the importance of colour. That was followed by contextual analysis, where I presented the impact of time and space in which the painter created the painting. I included social and economic aspect, placed the work in Kavčič’s personal life and among his other art works.
