Abstract

Title:
Reading badge, obligatory home reading and school essay by elementary school students and high school students
Abstract:
In my diploma thesis I will be discussing possible correlation between obligatory and optional reading and writing school essays. I'm interested, if the amount of material, that they read (pieces of writing, that elementary and high school students read for obligatory home reading or reading badge) effects on writing school essays and if the testees actually read prescribed books or if they read mainly literature summaries and literary studies. Concerning my diploma thesis, I will be focusing mainly on students successfulness in writing (an average grade of individual's school essay) and types of mistakes (grammatical, spelling (language correctness), stylistic, structural), that the students make most of the time or mistakes, that teachers and professors correct in essays most frequently. It is harder to evaluate or examine the content of essays, so I decided to examine their reading habits (how many books they need to read during one school year, where are they acquainted with the content of a piece of writing, which is considered at obligatory home reading, if they read for a reading badge – that applies only to elementary school students). I chose this topic mainly because I'm interested in the impact that reading has on an individual and its dimensions as part of human life.
