Abstract

Title:Herodotus and historiography: An analysis of the writing style, content and mythological elements in his work Histories and the representation of Herodotus as a historic source
Abstract:
In this dissertation, a presentation of the important elements of Herodotus’ historiographic paradigm, which are vital for the correct understanding of Herodotus as a historic source, are given. The first chapter deals with ancient Greek historiography before Herodotus and with a basic outline of Greek life on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, both of which are important elements, which shaped the later historiography of Herodotus. Afterwards, the basic outlying elements of Herodotus’ historiographic paradigm, his writing style and other important elements of The Histories, both in the conceptual and stylistic sense, are presented. In addition to the aforementioned, a short account of the perception of the father of history through time will be given, as well as his biography and the summary of The Histories presented.

Keywords:Herodotus, historiography, Histories, Ancient Greece, Classical antiquity
