Abstract

Title:On our own land: making of the first slovenian movie
Abstract:
This diploma deals with the historic perspective of the first Slovenian sound feature film production. The film is named “Na svoji zemlji” or in English: “On Our Own Land”. After the Second World War the socialistic government of the Peoples republic of Yugoslavia sought to realize Lenin's parole that movies are the most important element of art. A tender for the first Slovenian movie was published in the newspaper “Ljudska pravica” in the fall of 1946. Writer Ciril Kosmač applied, with a script based on his short story Očka Orel. The diploma deals with the script and the changes made to it throughout the production of the movie. After the script had been approved the film crew revised it under the supervision of the communist party in order to make it more suitable for filming. This displeased the scriptwriter Kosmač. He later joined the team entrusted with preparing the storybook for the movie. During the work the team dealt with staff turnover and the overall youthfulness of the team, which led to issues due to inexperience. Furthermore funding issues were always present. After significant changes the post of the movie director was given to a young France Štiglic. The majority of the movie was filmed in Baška grapa, where the film crew spent the summer of 1948. The crew constantly faced issues regarding their inexperience and lack of proper equipment. Nonetheless the final product was praised by both movie critics and general audience.
