The master thesis, entitled "Designing web maps based on the database of the Alpine Association of Slovenia", presents the design of web maps using the principles of graphic design. When designing web maps, it is important to have an appropriate database structure that allows for the most efficient updating of data and the rapid display of data in the browser used to view, create and use web mapping. The procedures for the preparation and arrangement of the database are presented to facilitate the creation and editing of web map data in the example of the Alpine Union of Slovenia database. The main focus was on designing cartographic base maps using two different ways to display maps online. The first method refers to the use of raster tiles for displaying maps online, and the second, in accordance with current trends and as an alternative of raster tiles, using vector tiles that can be subsequently formatted on the client side. Following the principles of graphic design, a new set of cartographic symbols was created to show the thematic content of the Alpine Association of Slovenia, which differs from the design of cartographic symbols for the printed mountain maps.
