The diploma thesis deals with the topic of life of people with dementia in residential home. In the theoretical part I defined dementia, stigmatization of people with dementia, institutional care, social networks and loneliness among people with dementia. I also described social work with people with dementia. Throughout my diploma thesis I researched the life of residents with dementia at the senior citizens home Dom starejših Na Fari. I was interested in how loneliness reflects in residents with dementia. I researched how life in residential home, the involvement in activities and social networks of residents with dementia, are connected to developing loneliness. I also researched the role of social workers in recognising and minimizing loneliness among residents with dementia. Not just five residents with dementia, in my qualitative research I also included social workers. As methods of collecting empirical data I used interview and observation. The results have shown that loneliness is frequent among people with dementia in residential home Dom starejših Na Fari. The social networks of residents with dementia are small, visitors are mostly their children and so living in senior citizens home is associated with loneliness. Social workers are aware of the problem of loneliness and they highlighted the importance of cooperation with relatives of people with dementia in reducing loneliness. I suggest education of relatives and volunteers so they can improve their skills in working with people with dementia. For social workers I suggest more individual work with residents with dementia.
