Cyanobacteria present a potential source of complex high-value chemicals, due to their carbon fixation, nitrogen fixation, and photosynthesis capability. However, cyanobacteria are rarely used due to expensive product extraction procedures and slow strain selection processes. Microfluidics allows for high throughput assays through the manipulation of small volumes of liquid. Due to the flexibility of such systems, they may be used in many different applications as screening assays, concentrating and growth analysis under different conditions.
