Abstract

Title:Biocatalytic processes in flow systems
Abstract:
Biocatalysis is a process in which biocatalysts are used to achieve chemical conversion of a substance. For this, enzymes isolated from cells, crude enzyme extracts or whole cells are used. Industry needs for green production, cleaner products and sustainable development have led to the improvement of classic processes and set new trends for chemical production. The transfer of biocatalytic processes to continuous operation brings many advantages over the production in classic batch systems. With the development of new, better and cheaper immobilization techniques of biocatalysts, it is expected that the use of such systems on an industrial scale will increase. Biocatalytic processes are carried out in different types of reactors. The choice of reactor depends on the used biocatalyst, the immobilization technique, and the reaction parameters. The literature refers to continuously operating types of reactors most suited for performing biocatalytic processes, immobilization techniques, and selected examples of biocatalytic processes in continuous systems.
