Abstract

Title:Coordination of Family, Work and Study Commitments: A Case Study of Female Students at University of Ljubljana
Abstract:
Studies are an ingredient for building a path to a brighter future. Female students are normally understood as a population that does not have children and is not present in the labour market. Family is considered a personal value that student mothers define as the most important. We learned that the majority did not plan a family with their partner, but that their pregnancy was unexpected. We also determined that all the mothers interviewed desire to have children regardless of their socioeconomic status. Partners are actively involved in the upbringing as well as care and security of their children. The outer circle of student mothers can be very helpful in coordinating many different spheres of studies, family and work. The women are the ones that by social construct provide care and perform household chores; moreover, the majority of the women are also employed or even studying at the same time. Therefore, the division of labour seems necessary and uneven according to social expectations. Coordinating all these different areas requires time, which is then allocated to fulfilling all the responsibilities, but which the student mothers lack. Most of them feel they are good at managing time this way and are satisfied with their coordination skills. Our results also show that not only time, but also studying presents a problem. As the emancipation of women increased, they also became more and more overburdened, since they are expected to assume ever more responsibilities.
