Abstract

Title:The use of narrative practice in social work with women survivors of domestic violence
Abstract:
In my Master's thesis I focused on narrative practices in social work with women who survived violence. Violence of various forms experienced by women affects their everyday life, health, sense of identity, plans and aspirations for the future. In Slovenia, when working with survivors of violence, the majority of social workers take into account feminist principles for working with women who have survived violence, but often they remain without words and ways to transfer the principles into concrete, everyday work. In the master's thesis, I presented narrative theories, practices that I find important for working with women who survived violence. The constructive epistemology, on which narrative approaches are based, offers us an understanding that the significance attributed to our experience and events is socially constructed, on the basis of which we can begin by exploring the influence of the wider society and system on the concrete experience of an individual. Different techniques such as externalization of the problem, re-authoring conversations, conversations that highlight unique outcomes, audience and scaffolding conversations are concrete actions that give us the opportunity to help a woman who survived the violence to tell a different story about her life, a story in which she does not see herself as a victim, but a survivor. Narrative ways of acting can be linked and integrated into the theory and practice of social work in our environment, in order to ensure that all women seeking help are provided with comprehensive assistance rather than only offering them support in the provision of security or legal procedures. Narrative ways of acting enable us to address all important issues such as resistance, identity, the influence of society and local norms and values on her beliefs in the process of assistance, and thus help her to start writing a new story of her life.
