There is still a lot of prejudices and stereotypes in the film industry's products. Certain groups of people are still represented in a problematic way. One of these groups is Latin American, who are still strongly negative represented in the media. Their representation in the media still causes class and racial stereotypes. The diploma deals with the television series Devious Maids and the way in which four main protagonists are represented in the first season of the series. Through cinematic semiotics, more specifically through labelling systems and binary oppositions and two dichotomies: whites/Latin Americans and upper/lower class , I discovered that Latin Americans are stereotyped in the series, but at the same time throughout the first season of the series, they move to the edge of their class, some stereotypes are also »broken«, which puts into question a typical representation of Latin Americans in the media. At the end of the diploma, I realized that research could be further extended to the remaining seasons to check if the main protagonists remain trapped within stereotypes or are represented differently.
