Abstract

Title:Modal analysis of thin sheet plates
Abstract:
When performing numerical modal analysis of thin plates, one has a palette of finite element types to choose from. In this assignment, two of those are analyzed more in-depth and the purpose of the comparison is to find the benefits of using shell type elements in place of, more typical, 3D elements while performing numerical modal analysis of thin plates. All of the simulations have been written in raw APDL programming language, which is also ran by commercial simulation tools in the background. Firstly, a simple, square thin plate without supports was analyzed. Analytically calculated natural frequencies served as a reference and finite element method analysis was then performed using both types of finite elements. Numerical modal analysis of the plate was performed next and complying results confirmed the code itself, as the numerical models were correct. Dynamic response of welded and reinforced profiles, often used in real-life products, was analyzed next.
