A promissory note is a type of a trade contract that denotes the criteria of a loan. Due to its wide usage during the medieval trade revolution, it is an important source on the European economic history of the time. The present master's thesis is devoted to the question of difference between the types of promissory notes used in the cities of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) and Piran during the passage into the 14th century. It clarifies the circumstances that at least indirectly influenced the work of notaries and, from preserved sources, selects representative examples of promissory notes and analyses their individual sections. Basic formulae included in every promissory note are thus shown alongside any other formulae, which were included in the contract as seen necessary by the parties involved. All formulae are analysed and compared with each other, according to their city of origin.
