This work includes process description about developing a device, with which it is possible to analyse analog incremental position and angle encoders. An encoder is often called a sensor, which transforms information about movement into analog or digital signals.
One of the most successful companies in Slovenia, which develops magnetic encoders is RLS merilna tehnika. I cooperated with them while writing this paper.
Encoder failure can often be deadly, that is why regular verification of operation and quick failure discovery is of high importance. The devices designing process, everything from specification, to simulations, operating concept, printed circuit board design and firmware description, is presented.
For an easier way of setting interface and encoder settings and for calculating, displaying and interpretation of signal parameters, a graphical user interface was also developed.
Final product quality was evaluated with many different measurements. First critical voltages were verified, followed by accuracy measurement and calibration derived from it. For reliability, inrush current measurement is important and finally oscilloscope was used for signal integrity test.
Furthermore, a comparison with a competing companies interface PWM20 from Heidenhain, which enables analysis of many different encoder types but comes with a heavier price tag, was made.
Completed interface for a given encoder type is comparable with PWM20. Despite its lower price, it does not compromise on accuracy and is appropriate for reliable and credible analysis of analog incremental encoders. After rigorous test and trial periods, I can assess that developed interface is within goals and is already used in R&D section of the company.
