Abstract

Title:The perception of the right to freedom of belief in a modern European society and state religious law in Slovenia
Abstract:
The preamble of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights has recognized the right to freedom of belief as one of the highest aspirations of humankind. However, the violation of this right is still often committed. In enhancing the efficiency of these fundamental rights and freedom, the civil society, organizations, and institutions which encourage the idea of peace and inter-religious harmony play a prominent role, despite numerous legal mechanisms protecting them. The discussion demonstrates different types of relationship between the state and religious communities, reflecting the level of weakness in the protection of the right to the freedom of belief. Nevertheless, it is important to point out the terminological shortcoming in our vocabulary. The discussion also highlights the significant role of different organizations and civil society in upholding the respect for fundamental human rights, with a focus on the right to freedom of belief. Finally, the article shows an example of good practice in the US which is considered a novelty worldwide.
