Abstract

Title:
Musculoskeletal injuries among radiologic technologists : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders represent a serious occupational problem among radiologic technologists. The main causes of these disorders are improper patient lifting and moving practices. Awkward and sustained posture can also contribute to the burden. Purpose: The purpose of our diploma work is to research work-related musculoskeletal injuries and pain among radiologic technologists and to determine a link between these disorders and other factors such as age, physical activity, etc. Methods: We collected data using an anonymous online questionnaire which consisted of 16 questions and was intended solely for radiologic technologists. After the survey was completed, we analyzed the answers and compared them with findings published in scientific literature. Results: The questionnaire was completed by sixty radiologic technologists (35 women and 25 men) aged from 20 to 59. Sixty-five percent of the respondents stated they have some sort of pain, which they attributed to working in this profession. The most stressful tasks are transferring patients from hospital beds (3.9) and wheelchairs (3.8) and also lifting patients and positioning a cassette or detector under them at the same time (3.4). The respondents felt the most pain in the lumbosacral spine (3.3), cervical spine (2.7) and shoulders (2.2). Forty-nine percent of RTs sought medical help because of aforementioned problems and 58 % of those went on a sick leave. Discussion and conclusion: The presence of pain is proportionately increasing with body mass index, but we have not found a link between the pain and physical activity or age of the respondents. Pain is more common in those employed at primary and tertiary levels of health care than in those employed at secondary ones, however, the presence of pain increases with years of service. Almost half of RTs acquired medical help, and most of them were diagnosed with spinal disc herniation, sprain and muscle strain. One third of all RTs who suffered from pain needed a sick leave due to diagnosed conditions. In spite of work-related pain, RTs in Slovenia are very satisfied with their profession, as 90 % of the respondents graded their level of satisfaction with 5 or 4. We believe that certain changes could be introduced based on our diploma work, which would lead to a gradual reduction of pain and even greater satisfaction with the profession.
