The purpose of this thesis is to find the extent of homophobia in Slovene secondary schools. In the introduction I have explained in theory the differences between real and systemic violence. I have also explained the origin and meaning of peer violence, the concept of bullying, how to recognize it and its consequences. I wanted to find out what causes children and young adults to become bullies, how to prevent bullying in school environment and the effects homophobia has in the school environment. Some researches made on homophobia in Slovene high schools are also mentioned later on. I also tried to find out severity and widespread of this issue. Severity and extent of this issue are examined. Law-enforced sanctions and syllabus are analyzed and presented. At the end of the theoretic part of the thesis, I have examined the functioning and familiarity of school social workers with facing homophobia in school environment. In the research part of the thesis I have focused on my research. I wanted to find out and present how often were the students of Slovene secondary schools victims of rumors or lies, based on their sexual orientation, the widespread of homophobia on the internet or on social media, the occurrence of physical violence with a result of injuries or mugging because of sexual orientation. I wanted to find out how often they were victims of insults, imitation, threats and (offensive) nicknames because of their sexual orientation. I also took interest in how often the students heard homophobic insults, had been physically assaulted based on their sexual orientation, if they sought help and if they have, where they had found it. At the end of the methodological part of the thesis I was interested in the why students who had been victims of homophobia have not tried to seek help. I discovered that homophobia is in fact a widespread issue in the school environment, mostly in the form of rumors, imitation, threats and offensive nicknames. I also found out most of the students hear homophobic imitations at least a few times a month and that most of the students who had been victims of homophobia in the school environment have not sought help. At the end I added a dissertation, conclusions and propositions.
