The thesis focuses on the examples of the subjunctive verbal pardigms in circumstantial clauses, taken from the novel El amor en los tiempos del cólera by Gabriel García Márquez, edition from 2005, first published in 1985, and its English translation Love in the Time of Cholera from 2007 by Edith Grossman.
The aim of the thesis is to compare the grammatical structures of the Spanish subordinate circumstantial clauses of manner, time, place and quantity containing the Spanish subjunctive verbal paradigms with their English translations, to demonstrate to what extent the subjunctive mood in the Spanish subordinate circumstantial clauses corresponds to the subjunctive mood in their English equivalents, and which are the alternative grammatical structures substituting the Spanish subjunctive mood in English.
The theoretical part focuses on the uses of the Spanish subjunctive in subordinate circumstantial clauses compared contrastively with the theory of the English subjunctive and modality. The empirical research consists of all the examples of grammatical forms taken from Gabriel García Marquez’s novel and its translation: the subjunctive verbal paradigms in the Spanish subordinate circumstantial clauses of manner, time, place and quantity, their English translations, the names of grammatical structures and the types of mood used in both languages.
