Abstract

Title:
Marriage adultery in five parts of the 19th century (Jurčič, Kersnik, Govekar, Vošnjak, Cankar)
Abstract:
Marriage adultery is certainly a topic which has been making a confusion since centuries. Already in the 19th century female adultery was particularly popular topic and not even the most famous authors from our territory could not resist that subject. Janko Kersnik, Josip Jurčič, Josip Vošnjak and Fran Govekar in their works defend the traditional image of a woman which is good, valuable, honest and obedient to her husband. To woman who does not respect this it is prescribed a punishment because in some ways she defies tradition and moral norms. They defend the Christian attitude of the sanctity of marriage and the fact that the evil needs to be punished. The only one who understands female adultery is Ivan Cankar in the short story Gospa Judit (Madam Judit, 1904). All of the women have one thing in common: none of them entered the marriage out of love. Their reason for the marriage was mainly because of material benefits (Kersnik, Vošnjak, Govekar, Cankar) only Jurčičev's beautiful Vida married her husband out of defiance to her parents. Unlike their wives, husbands only wished a beautiful and young woman who will guarantee them their heirs. We come to the realization that the financial reasons are not the ones for which the marriage would survive and that different reasons for marriage have enormous influence on marriage adultery. In fact to all the women it was missing only one thing actually the most important for the survival of marriage and that is love which they were directly connecting to happiness. Love and happiness were sought by women in the embrace of their lover, which in essence turned out to be a fatal act for everyone involved.
