Abstract

Title:
Modality in Slovene ortography. The example of comma
Abstract:
The undergraduate thesis focuses on rules in Slovene orthography about the use of comma that are modal. These are marks where comma usage depends on how a writer understands a linguistic situation where more variations are possible. The question arises whether that kind of orthographic rules are desired by the users of manual writing or not. Only one option should be better for an average user because it offers only one rescue of a problem and that is the main point of a linguistic manual. But more variations of solving a linguistic problem should be better for a user that already has more prior knowledge of linguistics. I have chosen ten sentences, in which comma could be written or not and put them into a questionnaire. I have distributed 30 of them among students of Slovene language and 30 among other people that were of as much different age and education as possible. I was trying to find out how will people, who are a lot in contact with linguistics, set the commas compared to people that should not have as much prior knowledge in this field. I compared the solutions and found out how the questionnaire participants responded to concrete examples where the orthography is ambiguous.
