This BA thesis discusses the topic of Major Arcana, the picture cards of Tarot that describe its contents through archetypal images. These come from the psychological theory on collective unconscious. The thesis defines the field of illustration and suggests the illustration of Major Arcana cards as visual communication of psychological concepts as a form of popular science illustration. The theoretical part studies the history of the cards and their making and focuses on the development of different topics used to illustrate card decks. Through research it strives to unveil why the cards are still relevant and why tarot is applicable to mythology. The analytical part applies the archetypal images to deities, animals and creatures from Slovenian mythology. We illustrate 22 cards of Major Arcana and explain their main design principles using illustration analysis using one card as an example.
