Abstract

Title:Product from mycelium - based composite materials
Abstract:
Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus that consists of thread-like fibers, called hyphae. One of the most important properties of mycelium is its ability to grow through the substrate and integrate small particles into a whole, therefore it can be compared to a natural adhesive. Biocomposite material made of mycelium is usually based on waste organic materials (sawdust, straw, coffee grounds, etc.) and mycelium that connects these materials. The properties of biocomposite material made of mycelium can be adapted by selecting the substrate, the type of fungus and post-processing. This material therefore offers numerous properties, such as complete biodegradability, durability, lightness, fire and water resistance, etc. The possibility of modifying the properties of this material allows us to use the material for various purposes. The aim of this project is to demonstrate how products made of conventional materials, such as plastics, polystyrene, etc. can be replaced with non-hazardous and environmentally friendly materials based on mycelium. The thesis was based on research of the material itself and its properties, as well as the potential possibilities of its use. The result of the project is an example of application of biocomposite material made of mycelium, nevertheless the broader objective is to educate the public about its use as an alternative to traditional synthetic materials and to encourage reflection on the use of unsustainable and ecologically disruptive materials.
