The purpose of this thesis is to conduct an analysis of synthetic woven canvases that are used in global and Slovenian conservation-restoration areas for purposes of (re)lining procedures of easel paintings.
A selection and evaluation of specific synthetic woven textile canvases was made according to their mechanical characteristics. The canvases selected for this analysis came from two global restoration material suppliers and, for comparison, one generic woven canvas from a local Slovenian supplier.
To analyse their mechanical characteristics, we prepared samples of selected synthetic woven canvases that represent the basis of our analysis of mechanical properties of selected synthetic canvases.
The core of this research was to conduct mechanical tests of selected synthetic canvas samples and analyse their tensile properties and maximum applied force before yielding of the material. We also measured maximum elongation at the moment of yield and isotropic anisotropic properties, where we made a comparison of characteristics of selected synthetic textile samples by the direction of their weave.
