Social media has become huge part of our everyday life and ''who isn't on Facebook, doesn't exist''. We share photos, opinions; this is where the modern society happens. We are used to staring into our smart phones, instantly receiving information and that everything is happening and going on social media. On the other hand, the society is more and more alienated from the sense of working together in matters of public importance. The participative model of democracy stresses open communication and participation of people. Facebook is therefore more than excellent tool for spreading democracy in contemporary fashion. This is exactly why we were interested to find out how local governments in Slovenia use Facebook. Through the analysis of the pages, posts and responses to them we found out, that Slovenian municipalities' adoption of Facebook as a communication tool is quite modest. Less than half of 212 Slovenian municipalities has an active Facebook page, the followers are passive when it comes to discussion and this part of municipalities' public relations is treated very differently from municipality to municipality.
