In the master’s thesis, we designed and produced a pop-up book as a more demanding graphical product. This is a book which is the same as a traditional book regarding its outer appearance. In the inside, however, it hides various paper folders and movable elements which encourage a reader to read and research and bring a certain amount of interactivity to the book.
Because there is a problem of naming such a product in Slovenia, we researched the terminology in the field of tridimensional books in Slovenia. In order to produce our own pop-up book, we studied the mechanisms of folding and shaping the paper and thus included various elements in the book. We described the procedure of producing the pop-up books and produced contents and design for our pop-up book. Because we wished to guarantee resistance and durability of the elements of the book which are very exposed to folding and rubbing, we analyzed and used the appropriate materials.
In the process of production, we combined all three analyzed papers and used wood for the covers. We used the strongest paper (synthetic paper film) for the production of moving and tridimensional elements. For the basic pages of the book, we used fibrous synthetic paper which is soft and flexible and at the same time, strong enough to ensure durability and the appropriate opening of the book. Connecting pages are made of the durable cellulose paper.
We produced graphics contents for the book in the Adobe Illustrator program. We performed the print on the UV ink jet printer.
The final product is the pop-up book which presents the points of interest of Cerknica Lake because of the combination of the used materials and the method of production in a creative way.
