Abstract

Title:Discrimination against immigrants in the Slovenian society
Abstract:
This master's thesis deals with the discrimination of immigrants in Slovenia. In the theoretical part we define concepts such as ethnic community, nation, nationalism and migrations. Since immigrants in their new country are often treated as »others«, we also define this concept and the differences that occur depending on the country from which the immigrant is coming (some foreigners are more »desirable« than others). Some pages are also devoted to the importance of different forms of capital for the lives of immigrants in their new environment, as well as multiculturalism and interculturalism. Nowadays, we are confronted with new ways of expressing prejudice that are more concealed. These are new forms of racism, which are no longer based on race or physical characteristics, but on cultural characteristics of individuals. Additionally, we more specifically define and describe hate speech, discrimination in the field of employment and at work, institutional racism and media representation of immigrants. In this master's thesis, a qualitative research approach is used, the data is obtained by a partially structured interview. The sample covers 16 immigrants from different countries. In the empirical part, we focus on the following topics: reasons for moving, experience with coming to Slovenia (the environment, people, obtaining and managing documents), general wellbeing in Slovenia and everyday contact with Slovenians (discrimination in the streets, cafes, by neighbours, etc.), discrimination in the field of employment and at work, discrimination in the health sector, discrimination in the field of criminal treatment (experience with the police), discrimination of immigrant children. The research results offer a deeper insight into the incidence or experience of discrimination by immigrants in Slovenia. The results of the study show that all immigrants who made up our sample are discriminated in Slovenia, however, in different intensities and in different life areas. The research is a useful contribution to the field of social pedagogy, especially because it is based on the user's perspective.
