Izvleček
Zaradi edinstvene življenjske zgodovine so kače pomembne v številnih ekoloških procesih, so plenilci in plen vretenčarjev in nevretenčarjev. V ta namen smo uporabili anketni vprašalnik in preizkus znanja o kačah.

Naslov:Student's knowledge and misconceptions about snakes and their willingness to participate in their conserevate
Izvleček:
Snakes are important in many ecological processes, due to their unique life history. They are predators as well as vertebrate's and non-vertebrate's prey. They once represented the source of admiration, fear and were used in different religious ceremonies and in medicine. Slovenian residents are afraid of snakes. They have created misconceptions and believe in different myths about them. All snakes in Slovenia are protected and listed on the IUCN Red list. The key institution that has an impact on a positive relation toward snakes, spreading knowledge and eliminating misconceptions about snakes, is also school. We carried out a survey in which we were interested in knowledge and misconceptions about snakes among pupils of elementary school. We used questionnaire and knowledge test that was based on snakes. There were 210 pupils participating in the survey, from 6th to 9th grade of 2 different elementary schools. We analysed all acquired data by gender, age and direct experience with animals. Results have shown lack of pupil's knowledge about snakes with a lot of misconceptions. Based on age, best answers were given by 7th grade and by the ones that have already held or seen a snake. But there were no significant differences between knowledge and direct experience with snake. Protection of species is one of the key acts to maintain their existence, fort his reason we were also interested in how willing were pupils in getting involved in snake protection. Pupils were answering 10 questions regarding snakes. Results have shown that the pupils were willing to participate in snake protection, even if they are afraid of them and don't want to run into them in the forest. Based on a gender, there is no significant difference in the answers between boys and girls, but higher in age, the interest in animal is decreasing. Direct experience with animals also has an imact on snakes protection because pupils that have once held a snake have a strong desire to be around it in the future. The survey can have a positive influence on future teachers, so they can include living organisms in their teaching and in this way help pupils to have direct experience with animals.
